Ellen Orenstein is the manager of the Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Department at the North Decatur campus. She transitioned into the management role in 2014 and has been a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist since 2009. Ellen began her career on the Inpatient Rehab Unit as a staff speech therapist specializing in cognitive-communication disorders and swallowing in the neurologically impaired population.
Ellen earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders from Middle Tennessee State University near Nashville where she grew up. In 2006, Ellen moved to Georgia and earned her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Georgia. Ellen holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In addition, she is a Vital Stim® swallowing therapy certified clinician.
Ellen is married and has two young boys and strives to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, watching old movies, eating good food, and listening to live music.
Beth Birmingham, OTR/L, CHT
Beth is an Occupational Therapist that has worked at Dekalb Medical’s Outpatient Rehabilitation clinics for 16 years. Initially starting off at Dekalb Medical’s Arthritis Care Center, she developed a special interest in Rheumatology and has continued to provide presentation to the community and Occupational Therapy students at Brenau University on different types of Arthritic conditions.
Over the years Beth has taken multiple courses to provide evidence based practice to treat Neurological and Orthopedic conditions that affects individuals throughout our community, but also found a special interest in Hand Therapy. Beth has been Certified in Hand Therapy since 2005 providing service to individuals with overuse syndromes, nerve compression, tendon repairs and fractures of the upper extremity. Having been an athlete, having a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition/Dietetics and Occupational Therapy, she tries to be a good example to her clients on healthy living habits.
Beth is an active member of the American Society of Hand Therapists and Georgia’s Upper Extremity Special Interest Group. The thing she enjoys most is spending time with her family in the outdoors.
Melanie Johnson, MOT, OTR/L, CSLT, CFCE
Melanie was born and raised in Shreveport, LA where she grew up with a passion of helping others. Melanie attended Dillard University in New Orleans, LA where she received Bachelor of Science degree in 2003. She furthered her educated attending LSU Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health Professions, earning her Master of Occupational Therapy in 2005. Melanie has been a member of the Dekalb Medical team since 2011 and has 10 years of clinical experience as an Occupational Therapist.
Melanie’s clinical interests include hand therapy and she is working toward a Hand Certification. Melanie currently holds certifications in the following treatment approaches: CSLT - Casley Smith Lymphedema Therapist, CEAS II - Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist II, CEFE - Certified Essential Functions Evaluator, CFCE - Certified Functional Capacity Evaluator. Outside of work, Melanie enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as taking continuing education courses to further her clinical skills.
Diana M. Boswell, M.C.D., CCC/SLP
Diana grew up in several cities of south Texas and Louisiana. She graduated with her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA in 1985. She furthered her studies earning her Masters of Communication Disorders degree from Louisiana State University School of Allied Health in 1991.
Diana has a total of 24 years of clinical experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist in many different areas of her field. She has worked in rehabilitation hospitals, long term care facilities, home health and in the public county school system. Diana has been a part of the Dekalb Medical team since 2015, where she splits her time treating in both the inpatient rehabilitation center and the outpatient rehabilitation clinic.
All of her life, she knew that she wanted to work in a field to help people in some way. Diana feels like she has the perfect job because each and every day she has the chance to make a positive difference in the life of her patients. Her hobbies include spending time with family, reading, and anything to do with being outside.
Sally Cottrell, PT
Sally earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida in 1976. Sally has 39 years of clinical experience in physical therapy with 35 years of experience working at Dekalb Medical. Her focus of physical therapy treatment is working with a variety of orthopedic conditions. Her interests outside of work include Japanese embroidery and volunteer work with three different organizations.
Carol Crochet, PT, CSLT
Carol received a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University in 1994 and a BA in Biology from Agnes Scott College in 1990. She became certified in the Casley-Smith Method for treating lymphedema in 2005. In 2014, she received certification in Oncology Rehabilitation through the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute. Carol obtained certification for Dry Needling in 2015 through Kineticore.
Carol has been practicing physical therapy at Dekalb Medical since 1998. Her focus of physical therapy is primarily with lymphedema/ swelling-related disorders and cancer rehabilitation. She also treats the orthopedic population as well as those patients requiring wound care. Carol is from Cornelia, Georgia. She is married to Ken and they have two children, Carson and Clayton.Lisa Crumpton, BS, PT
Lisa was born in Atlanta ,Georgia and grew up in Clayton County, south of Atlanta. She was introduced to PT as a career by her high school Biology/Anatomy teacher. She attended West Georgia College (now West Georgia University) and completed her bachelor of Physical Therapy at the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University). She graduated in 1981 and started her career at South Fulton Hospital and came to Dekalb Medical in September of 1982 and has stayed since that time.
Lisa is certified in dry needling, which is a treatment technique for trigger points. She has attended Maitland courses 1-5 for manual therapy for spine and extremities. She has attended multiple courses for the spine and extremities which allows her to treat many orthopedic problems. She has also attended courses for the neurological/CVA patient to broaden her experience. Lisa enjoys working with students from various universities. Outside of work, she enjoys playing tennis, cooking and reading. She loves watching college Football (Go Dawgs) and Soccer.
Tessa Elliott, PT, DPT
Tessa grew up in Atlanta. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Earth Science at Rice University in Houston, TX and her Masters of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She worked in environmental disaster planning and prevention for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for four years. During this time, she became interested in physical therapy as a way to continue her career in health with a more direct focus on healthcare working one-on-one with patients. Tessa loves physical therapy because it combines many different techniques and empowers patients to heal their own bodies and prevent future pain and injuries. In 2015, she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA and began her career at Dekalb Medical working with patients in both the hospital and clinic setting.
Tessa sees patients with orthopedic, neurologic, and pelvic floor diagnoses. She has an increased interest in woman’s health physical therapy services. Outside of work, she enjoys running, hotyoga, pilates, and hiking.
Erica Fredricks, PT, DPT, Vestibular Rehab Specialist, LSVT Certified BIG Clinician
Erica grew up in Tampa, Florida where she was introduced to the world of Physical Therapy as a patient recovering from ACL surgery. Erica earned her bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from the University of Florida in 2012 and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University in 2015. Her interests include treating patients with both orthopedic and neurological conditions as well as individuals with vertigo and dizziness.
Erica is a Vestibular Rehabilitation Specialist as recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), completing the certification course in April 2015. Her interests include Aquatic Therapy, which is offered as an alternative mode of treatment for patients with various conditions at the Wellness Center located at Dekalb Medical North Decatur Campus. Erica is certified in LSVT BIG therapy which is a treatment approach for individuals with Parksinson’s Disease.
Erica has been a part of the Dekalb Medical Outpatient Rehabilitation team since 2015. Outside of work her interests include traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.
Hiral Patel PT, DPT
Hiral grew up in Nairobi, Kenya and furthered his college education in Montreal Canada. He obtained his postgraduate education from Mercer University where he graduated with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree in 2014. Hiral has been practicing in both the acute care and outpatient physical therapy settings for almost 2 years at Dekalb Medical hospital. Hiral is the lead physical therapist at the Dekalb Medical WorksWell clinic where he treats patients for Occupational Medicine. The Works Well Clinic is located next to Dekalb Medical North Decatur Hospital at 1045 Sycamore Drive, Decatur, Ga 30030. Outside of work, Hiral loves cooking, traveling and hiking.
Marianne Saxon, PT
Marrianne graduated from Georgia State University in 1996 with a
Bachelor is Science in Physical Therapy. She has worked at Dekalb
Medical since 1996 in all areas of care including acute care, inpatient
rehabilitation, skilled nursing and outpatient rehabilitation. Her areas
of focus include the neurologic, amputee, and orthopedic patients. She
has continued with neuromuscular training with advicanced courses using
Jones Strain Counterstrain techniques.
Elizabeth Todd PTA - CSLT
Elizabeth has lived in Atlanta since 1978. As a youth, she was introduced to physical Therapy by a favorite aunt and never looked back since. Elizabeth loves being able to help people become more independent and believes her career offers many growth opportunities to help address dysfunction. Through her experience, she has learned that no two patients are alike and she enjoys problem solving with patients to reach the best outcomes.
Elizabeth earned her Bachelors in Special education (mild-moderate) birth-5 years, at Utah State University in 2006 and furthered her studies earning her Associates in Physical Therapy at Gwinnett Technical Institute in 1994 associates in Physical Therapy. She is certified in Lymphedema treatment (CSLT) and currently working towards a certificate in Kinesiotaping. For more than a year, Elizabeth has been part of the aquatics rehabilitation team at Dekalb Medical which is one of the few pool therapy programs in Atlanta. Elizabeth has worked in Physical Therapy for 21 years and has been at Dekalb Medical since 2010. Outside of work, she enjoys family and friends, river running, hiking, video editing, sewing and cooking.
