A little over two years ago, I was 62 years old and just over 300 pounds. The thought of getting out of the house and doing just about anything was exhausting. Although both of my knees had been replaced, it was still painful to get around. I couldn’t fit into a movie theater seat and I couldn’t strap into an airplane seat. Now, one weight loss surgery and two years later, I am jumping out of airplanes at 14,000 feet.
I have been happily married for 47 years and have two daughters and a son. One of my daughters works part-time at DeKalb Medical and met Dr. Scott Steinberg at the hospital. She has a weight problem as well so she asked him about the surgical weight loss options available there. He told her about the free informational sessions offered at DeKalb Medical two Thursdays a month, so we signed up and went to the next session.
After living with the restrictions caused by being obese for many years and hearing from Dr. Steinberg about how harmful obesity can be to your health, we both decided to do something about it. My daughter opted for the Lap Band surgery, and I decided on the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Today, I weigh 150 pounds less and I’m wearing a size that I’ve never fit in before.
From the day I had my surgery, I have had no regrets. I am very careful about what I eat, and I exercise on a regular basis. For several years I attended regular support group meetings and I still have a weight loss partner who I turn to when times get tough, but I’m doing what I need to do and the weight is staying off.
Gastric bypass surgery is definitely one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Now I don’t have to be the first person in a room so that I can find a chair I can fit in comfortably. I have a new life and am doing things I never dreamed I’d do. Besides skydiving, I had my first ride on a horse last fall (something I would never had subjected an animal to before my surgery), joined a book club, developed a new group of friends that I play cards with, and I just got home from a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Thanks to Dr. Steinberg and the staff at DeKalb Medical’s Surgical Weight Loss Center, the restrictions have been taken off my life. I am living life like a “normal” person and enjoying every minute of it!
