- Swallowing Therapy occurs when a patient has difficulty
tolerating oral feeding. This type of therapy is done by a speech
therapist and includes strengthening exercises, sensory stimulation,
positional modifications during feeding, and/or diet texture
modifications. The therapist works directly with the patient and family
to establish a plan best suited and individualized for that patient and
family. This therapy often includes follow up testing to ensure

- Language Therapy provides patients who have difficulty
understanding, speaking, reading or writing, treatment that will improve
the ability to functionally communicate in one or all of these domains.
It is designed to increase effectiveness of communication in the home,
community, work and social settings. Therapy is provided in individual
sessions though the therapists may also recommend participation in free
group activities conducted at Emory Decatur Hospital to
aid in the carryover of strategies and skills taught in the individual

- Speech Sound/Dysarthria Therapy is effective for persons
who have had a change in the way they produce words and phrases due to
illness or injury. Therapy may include neuromuscular re-education,
strengthening exercises of the mouth and throat muscles, and education
of strategies to improve speech intelligibility. These services are
available at our Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory Hillandale outpatient clinics.
- Voice Therapy is offered to those who are experiencing a
change in voice or resonance as a result of surgery, trauma and/or
medical factors. Therapeutic approaches include strengthening or
loosening exercises, biofeedback, stretches and vocal hygiene programs
which include home exercise programs. These services are only available
at our Emory Decatur Hospital outpatient clinic.
- Cognitive Therapy is a type of speech therapy provided to
persons who have experienced difficulties with memory, organization,
problem solving, time management, specialty occupational therapy program
that is directed by a certified occupational therapist. It provides
driver assessment for older adults, disabled persons and teens, and
training and adaptive equipment recommendations for vehicle operation
for new, experienced and elderly drivers. These services are available

- Augmentative Communication Evaluation and Therapy
provides patients with a unique evaluation and treatment plan that
increases the ability to functionally communicate with the assistance of
a specialized computer designed for speech output. Therapists work with
companies who build computerized devices for speech generation to
expose patients to many possibilities for their functional

- Pediatric Speech-Language Therapy provides evaluation and
treatment of young children with speech, language, fluency or
swallowing difficulties. These services are available at our Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory Hillandale outpatient clinics.
- Infant Swallowing Therapy is provided by a speech
pathologist experienced with neonatal feeding and swallowing evaluation
and treatment to assist in the smooth transition of your baby from the
NICU to home. Therapy is family centered and is designed to help your
baby grow and thrive. These services are available at our Emory Decatur Hospital outpatient clinic only.
Inpatient speech therapy services are available for all ages
and include neonatal assessment and feeding assistance, as well as
comprehensive assessments and therapy for articulation, fluency, and/or
language processing disorders from developmental delay, neurological
disorders, or injury to the speech and swallowing mechanisms or brain. Our speech therapists provide these speech therapy
services, with the exception of the neonatal and infant services, at all
campuses: North Decatur, Hillandale and LTAC.
