Q: How do I know if I need therapy?


A: Therapy may benefit individuals who experience pain or difficulty performing everyday activities such as walking, bathing, dressing, grooming, cooking, cleaning, communicating, eating, or thinking. Therapy may be beneficial after a surgical procedure, sports related injury, serious illness, or cancer. If you’re experiencing a decline after a brain injury sustained in an accident, stroke, or progressive disease such as Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis therapy may improve your quality of life. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate for therapy.

Q: Is a physician’s referral always required to attend therapy at DeKalb Medical?

A: Yes. DeKalb Medical requires that all patients have a physician’s referral in order to be evaluated for therapy.

Q: What is the difference between home health therapy and outpatient therapy?

A: Home health therapy is typically provided only to those experiencing significant difficulty leaving home and is always completed in the home. Outpatient therapy is provided in a clinic outside of the home. Outpatient therapy provides a gym with equipment and modalities designed to provide just the right amount of prescribed physical activity for your condition.

Q: How do I figure out what kind of therapy I need?

A: This will ultimately be decided by your physician and/or therapist. However, Physical Therapy focuses on issues with the spine, lower body, walking, and balance in order to improve your mobility. Occupational Therapy specializes in the upper body and fine motor activities in order to improve your ability to complete activities of daily living. You may need Speech Therapy if you’ve experienced choking or coughing when eating, changes in your speech or voice, difficulty communicating, or difficulty remembering/thinking. If you still are uncertain, your therapist and/or physician can help identify what you need.

Q: How do I get a therapy referral?

A: Any doctor can write a prescription/referral for therapy. Always let your doctor know if you think you may benefit from rehabilitation.

Q: How do I make an appointment?

A: Call the location you would like to attend once a prescription is obtained.

Please have the *physician prescription/referral and your insurance information available when you call to schedule your appointment. The referral may be faxed from the physician’s office.

Print, complete, and bring the Patient Intake Forms with you to the first appointment to speed up the registration process.

Medical/Clinical notes from the physician may be required for some services.

Q: What do I need to bring on my first appointment?

A: Please bring: 1) copy of your prescription/referral; 2) picture ID; 3) Insurance card; 4) Intake Forms (if completed prior)

Q: What should I expect my first appointment?

A: Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your evaluation time in order to get registered. Your evaluation will last approximately one hour (times may vary for audiology and driving). Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Your highly trained therapist will spend the first session evaluating your current abilities and needs. Then, you and your clinician will develop a customized treatment plan. Additional therapy appointments, if required, will be scheduled at the conclusion of your session.

Q: Does it cost anything to park?

A: No. Our PARKING IS FREE at both locations. Please bring in your parking ticket at the North Decatur Location and we will validate it!

Q: What insurance do you take?

A: We verify all insurance benefits before start of service and will provide you with an estimated cost of service up front. We have financial advisors on hand to arrange payment plans if needed. We currently accept the following insurance plans:

A: You may be eligible to apply for a reduced payment schedule. Our financial counselor 404.501.5309 can assist you with this process.

Q: How do I get a copy of my therapy medical records?

A: All copies of the medical record must be obtained by calling the DeKalb Medical business office at 404.501.5183.
