ImPACT Concussion Testing
DeKalb Medical has expanded its sports medicine program to include the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (imPACT) program, a user-friendly computer-based concussion evaluation system designed to improve the standard of care for athletes suffering concussions.
We recognize sports-related concussions are a growing and serious health problem in the United States with 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes suffering annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Recent studies also conclude concussions in high school sports are rising at an annual rate of 15 percent.
Given the inherent complexities of concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing whenever possible. ImPACT provides useful information, such as current symptoms and neuropsychological data, to assist qualified practitioners in making sound return-to-play decisions following concussions, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion.
