robotic assisted surgery

Bert ChenAt the beginning of 2009, the National Cancer Institute estimated that over 190,000 new cases of prostate cancer would be diagnosed throughout the year. That may be a scary number, but the good news is that prostate cancer is very treatable, with several different treatment options.

A minimally invasive, laparoscopic prostatectomy can be performed without a robotic surgical system, but the robotic system offers advantages that can provide a better outcome. Bert Chen, M.D., and Lambda Msezane, M.D., use the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System at DeKalb Medical for prostate surgery. Chen explains that the optimal magnification of the system and the instruments increase the surgeon’s dexterity and precision during surgery.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include smaller incisions and less blood loss during surgery. It can also reduce the amount of time needed for postoperative recovery.

Because the robotic surgical system is an expensive investment for a hospital, not all surgeons have the same amount of experience using it. When talking with a doctor about treatment options, don’t be afraid to ask how long the surgeon has been performing a procedure, how many procedures he or she has performed using this technique, and what is his or her comfort level with the technique.

To learn more about this technique, view Dr. Chen’s informative video. To find a surgeon who is experienced in the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System, contact DeKalb Medical’s physician referral service at 404.501.WELL (9355).
