Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
Cancer remains among the country’s top serious diseases, but health officials agree that early detection is one of the best ways to combat the disease. DeKalb Medical understands that a cure is most likely when cancer is diagnosed early. Therefore, we have regular cancer screenings in Atlanta for breast, prostate and skin cancers. We also offer cancer screening opportunities for any problems related to unusual bleeding, digestive disorders and potential lung disease. Listen in as Dr. April Speed talks about when to get a mammogram or Dr. Duane Barclay explains how simple yet important it is to have a colonoscopy.
The most common type of cancer is breast cancer. At DeKalb Medical, we have a Comprehensive Breast Care program that addresses all of your breast care needs, from cancer screening to cancer diagnosis to treatment. If you would like to schedule a mammogram, call 404.501.2660. We also offer a Genetic Risk Assessment cancer screening that can help identify individuals who are at higher risk for certain types of hereditary cancers. Cancer Diagnosis in Georgia
If you don’t have a doctor but think you are having symptoms that might be related to cancer, DeKalb Medical can help. You can call our EASY Access line at 404.501.EASY, and we will arrange for you to meet with a specialist by the next business day to evaluate your symptoms and find the right diagnosis and treatment for your problem. Most symptoms are not cancer-related but still may require medical care.
If your mammogram showed that you have an abnormality, call our Comprehensive Breast Care Center at 404.501.PINK and an oncology-certified nurse navigator will guide you through the process of diagnosing your breast problem and coordinating the appropriate treatment, whether it’s a breast cancer diagnosis or a non-cancerous breast problem.
Second Opinion Program
If your doctor has diagnosed you with cancer and suggested a treatment but you’d like a second opinion, DeKalb Medical Cancer Center can help with that as well. We are a Bloch Second Opinion institution – one of only five in the state. This means that DeKalb Medical has a group of highly trained specialists who will see you within 48 hours to provide a second opinion on your cancer diagnosis and treatment proposal. This can involve questions related to cancer screening, cancer diagnosis, surgical options for breast, prostate or any other cancer site, and review of suggested chemotherapy protocols and any other areas related to cancer treatment.
Your case may also be presented in our weekly Tumor Conference, where a large number of cancer specialists will review your case and form a consensus about the best course of action. For more information on the Bloch Second Opinion program, visit www.blochcancer.org. For a second opinion at DeKalb Medical, call 404.501.EASY.
