should i be screened?

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines support screening for people at high risk for lung cancer. Research has proven that early screening and diagnosis reduce the number of deaths from lung cancer; however, this screening is not for everyone.

Lung cancer screening is based on risk. Unless you are at high risk for lung cancer, this screening is not for you. Use the chart below to determine if you should be screened for lung cancer. You will notice the term “Pack Years” in the guidelines. Pack years are calculated as follows:

Number of packs per day X years of smoking = pack years

For example:
1.5 packs a day X 30 years = 45 pack years

If you fall into one of the high risk categories, it is recommended that you get an annual screening. Call 404.501.LUNG (5864) to request a screening.

Tab 1: High Risk Groups

Risk Criteria:

  • at least 55 years old, and;
  • at least 30 pack years of smoking (unless you quit smoking more than 15 years ago)

or

  • at least 50 years old, and;
  • at least 20 pack years of smoking (unless you quit smoking more than 15 years ago), and
  •  one other risk factor (except for second-hand smoke)

Tab 2: Moderate Risk Group

Risk Criteria:

  • at least 50 years old, and;
  • at least 20 pack years of smoking or second-hand smoke,
  • and no other risk factors

If you fall into this category, no screening is recommended at this time.

Tab 3: Low Risk Group

Risk Criteria:

  • at least 50 years old and/or
  • less than 20 pack years of smoking

If you fall into this category, no screening is recommended at this time.

What Does This Screening Cost?

The charge for this important early detection screening is only $149. This fee includes the CT scan, interpretation by a board-certified radiologist and review of the results by a board-certified lung specialist, if necessary. For more information or to schedule a screening, call 404.501.SCHD.
