Hear Derek Jackson's inspiring story and receive tips for achieving your best health on January 24.
Diabetes runs in Derek Jackson’s family and he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the young age of 12. Living with diabetes for so many years inspired Derek to seek a career in medical fitness. While pursuing a degree in Health and Fitness Management at Clayton State, Derek noticed tingling in his legs and his diabetes stated flaring up.
At age 22, Derek said to himself, “I can’t go out like this.” He changed his eating habits and started working out consistently. He adopted a mantra of “Focus and Endure” and was able to prevent his muscle atrophy and nerve damage from becoming debilitating.
In October 2017, Derek (now 24) joined DeKalb Medical’s Wellness Center. Because of his own healthcare journey, Derek is able to fully relate to those members experiencing health challenges. He particularly loves working with other DeKalb Medical staff to help them take the best care of themselves.
“I don’t take good health for granted anymore,” says Derek. “I want everyone to realize that if they ‘focus and endure,’ they can accomplish their health goals.” Because the Wellness Center is a medical fitness center, Derek modifies workouts for each client depending on their medical circumstances. For one client with Vertigo, Derek leads standing exercises rather than having the client lay on the floor.
Derek spoke at a well-attended Lunch and Learn in the Wellness Center last fall. If you missed that opportunity to hear Derek’s inspirational story, join us Wednesday, January 24 at 12 p.m. for tips on achieving your best health despite your medical challenges.
