The DeKalb Medical Auxiliary hosted the annual Angel Garden Memorial Service on Saturday, Oct. 18, to honor the memory of infants who died prematurely in the previous year
s. The special service, hosted by DeKalb Medical Auxiliary members and Women’s Services, took place at Melwood Cemetery.
“This event is truly special and we hope that it helps families that are going through or have gone through this difficult time,” stated DeKalb Medical Pastoral Care Director McClellon Cox. “At DeKalb Medical, we are more than just a hospital; we strive to bring families and communities together through all phases of healthcare.”
The Angel Garden Memorial Service is a project supported by the DeKalb Medical Auxiliary. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Melwood Cemetery who partner with the Auxiliary to provide this service for the infants’ families. Auxiliary members serve as volunteer gardeners who maintain an area of the cemetery devoted to the memory of the infants. Seasonal flowers and shrubbery as well as a bench make the space a welcoming and quiet location for parents to visit and reflect. The Auxiliary provides the materials the volunteer gardeners use for plants, flowers and other supplies.
A monument in the area captures the intent of the project: “Special lives pass from sight but never from our hearts
