eMAR Helps DeKalb Medical Improve Patient Outcomes
June 19, 2013
It’s been one year since DeKalb Medical began implementation of Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) across its three-campus health care system. Since, 999 users/employees have been trained in eMAR, which enables the hospital to document medication administrations in a real-time, fully integrated electronic documentation system, thus improving patient safety and outcomes, and clinical satisfaction.
eMAR increases efficiency by streamlining the medication administration process with real-time and complete medication documentation. It enhances clinical decision making because it offers robust clinical screening of medication orders, including drug-drug interaction, drug dosing and administration, drug-allergy, drug therapy monitoring and IV checking. This ensures the seamless coordination of steps across the continuum of patient care. It adheres to the Meaningful Use aspect of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Training requires two computer-based learning modules and a four-hour class per user. Seventy-one users were trained at DeKalb Medical Long Term Acute Care in downtown Decatur, the first of the three campuses to implement the system, going live on June 6, 2012. Hillandale launched on October 14, 2012 and 226 users are trained on that campus. On March 17 of this year, eMAR went live at the North Decatur campus, and 702 users are trained. Each hospital unit that uses eMAR features unit-based “super-users” who are specially trained to address user questions and issues.
eMAR is accessible for users throughout their units on desktop computers at nursing stations, mobile carts and wall-mounted units located near patient rooms.
