HealthGrades DeKalb Medical Among Top 10 Hospitals in GA for Overall Ortho and Spine Surgery 2012

Decatur, GA -- (Oct. 18, 2011) -- A report released today by HealthGrades named DeKalb Medical among the top 10 hospitals in Georgia for Overall Orthopedics and Spine Surgery for 2012, along with 5-Star ratings for Overall Orthopedics and Spine Surgery for 2012. "Maintaining high clinical standards is very important for favorable patient outcomes, and achieving these HealthGrades ratings demonstrates our commitment to providing our patients quality care," said Nazarie Romain, MBA, RN, Joint Care Coordinator with DeKalb Medical's orthopedics center of excellence, the Joint Solutions Center (JSC).
HealthGrades also announced that DeKalb Medical achieved 5-Star ratings for the Treatment of Heart Failure, Peripheral Vascular Bypass Surgery. "We are extremely pleased to receive highest ratings for our cardiac and vascular care, particularly since this is within the first year of launching our Heart and Vascular Institute," said Patrick Greene, Executive Director of Heart and Vascular Services, DeKalb Medical.
The HealthGrades report found that patients treated at 5-star rated hospitals experience a 73 percent lower risk of mortality and a 63 percent lower risk of complications. Key findings of the HealthGrades 2011 Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America report include:
- Patients had, on average a 73 percent lower risk of dying in a 5-star rated hospital compared to a 1-star rated hospital, and a 54 percent lower risk of dying in a 5-star rated hospital compared to the national average.
- Patients had, on average, were 63 percent less likely to experience in-hospital complications than patients at 1-star programs, and had a 43 percent lower chance of developing an in-hospital complication than the national average.
- If all Medicare patients from 2008 through 2010 had been treated at 5-star hospitals, 240,040 lives could have potentially been saved.
- If all Medicare patients from 2008 through 2010 had gone to 5-star hospitals for their procedure, 164,472 in-hospital complications could have potentially been avoided.
