Former Patients Lead Innovative Hospital Program

October 26, 2011

Atlanta, GA -- Your doctor tells you that you need surgery to get rid of hip pain but wouldn't it be a relief to talk with someone who's been through the operation to find out what it's really like? DeKalb Medical is connecting patients who've been there with prospective patients who are considering joint replacement surgery at the Joint Solutions Center (JSC), through its JSC Ambassador program. Ambassadors have recently undergone hip or knee replacement at DeKalb Medical, and now they're giving back by assisting others in making informed health decisions to enhance their quality of life.

"Our patient outcomes and customer satisfaction rates consistently outperform most hospitals in the nation because we provide our patients the support to succeed. The information and education our patients receive beforehand, including the opportunity to talk with former patients through the JSC Ambassador program, equips patients to make the best choices for their particular needs," said Nazarie Romain, RN, MBA, JSC Joint Care Coordinator.

Each quarter, DeKalb Medical hosts focus groups called "Reunion Dinners" where patients -- also known as "graduates"-- who've undergone hip or knee replacement give feedback on their experience from the day their orthopedic surgeon advised them of their treatment options through rehabilitation and recovery. At each Reunion Dinner, JSC graduates are invited to volunteer as Ambassadors. Since the program's inception in 2009, more than dozens of Metro Atlantans have gotten their active lifestyles back -- and added JSC Ambassador activities to their schedules.

"Prospective patients are more likely to move forward with surgery right away once they hear about JSC patient success rates and how quickly former patients are able to get back to the things they enjoy. The overwhelming consensus from DeKalb Medical patients after having total joint replacement surgery is that they wish they had done it sooner," adds Romain.
