DeKalb Medical Wins Top Award for Patient Satisfaction
May 24, 2011
Over 200 leaders from orthopedic programs around the country gathered together at the Marshall|Steele 5th Annual Musculoskeletal Service Line Summit to collaborate on the best practices around patient care and outcomes collection. Topics included patient satisfaction, pain management, sleep apnea, operating room training, leadership development and managing from results.
DeKalb Medical received the award for “Patient Satisfaction” by earning an exceptional ranking of 92% by their patients. This demonstrates the hospital’s focus on their patients’ entire joint replacement experience including a focus on providing exceptional patient care and education throughout the entire Continuum of Care.
Patients who undergo joint replacement surgery at the Joint Solutions Center (JSC) at Dekalb Medical in Atlanta, GA stay on a dedicated unit of the hospital and are guided through a set daily schedule aimed to get patients healthy, active and back to their homes and normal activities as soon possible. A critical component of the daily routine is the twice daily group exercise sessions guided by expert physical therapists. A family member or friend of the patient also “coaches” the patients to provide encouragement, support and an added level of confidence to return home.
“I can’t recommend the surgery enough for anyone who is living with chronic joint pain,” says Pastor Michael Roper, who had both knees replaced. “The JSC is outstanding. The set-up is awesome, and the staff at DeKalb Medical are so polite and caring. I’m amazed at the mobility I have regained and how much more I can enjoy life,” Roper adds. Beverly Brett, who chose the JSC for her hip replacement, shares, “I’ve had surgery several times, but, I’ve never been treated as well as I was at DeKalb Medical. Everything was first class…there’s not one person who doesn’t treat you like you’re special!”
“The Joint Solutions Center (JSC), with the leadership of Nazarie Romain, Joint Care Coordinator, and Randy McClain, nurse manager, has produced remarkable patient satisfaction scores that are congruent with what our patients and families are telling us about their experience. There is consistent engagement and collaboration among the interdisciplinary team (nursing, therapy, surgery, care management, physicians and support services) to produce the very best possible patient outcomes. Our daily JSC Care Team Huddle is designed to provide structure that supports patient-centered communication and problem solving. You can see that the staff care deeply about their patients and are proud to provide exceptional service. They are an amazing team producing superior results,” says Cherie Kunik, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Director of Patient Care Services, DeKalb Medical.
