DeKalb Medical Receives International Award
February 22, 2011
Decatur, GA – DeKalb Medical has been named among the first recipients of the "IBCLC Care Award for Hospitals, Birthing Facilities" granted by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). DeKalb Medical is one of only five hospitals, birthing facilities or birthing services in the state of Georgia and just 192 worldwide to receive the honor.
"Our DeKalb Medical reputation for supporting women who have chosen to breastfeed their baby has grown by word of mouth, mom to mom. We frequently are told, 'My friend told me about DeKalb Medical's lactation support programs and all the help she received while in the hospital and also after going home…I wish I had come here to have my baby," says Jamie Ray, RN, IBCLC, Manager, OB Community Education, DeKalb Medical
The metro-Atlanta hospital system met stringent criteria to receive the award. Criteria included having one or more professional lactation consultants on staff, operating the lactation program at least 5 days a week; completing a project that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding; and documenting breastfeeding training for nursing, medical, and other staff who care for new families.
An international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. These breastfeeding experts become certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) by passing a rigorous examination.
