LTAC Family Support Group Now Available
November 18, 2010
Decatur, GA -- Caregivers of patients at DeKalb Medical Long Term Acute Care at Downtown Decatur now have a family support group available to help them cope with the burden of their loved one's illness. The LTAC Family Support Group
meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month and 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the Downtown Decatur hospital
, 450 N. Candler Road, Decatur, Ga. 30030.
LTAC staff members created this resource, which includes both an educational component and an open forum for attendees to share their experiences. DeKalb Medical Occupational Therapist janet Jones explains how devastating it can be to have a family member who is going through illness that requires the extended, specialized care of an LTAC. "In many cases, the family is shell-shocked," says Jones. "Their loved one has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a long time and may have even been close to death on more than one occasion. This group can help people learn to take care of themselves while coping with their family member's condition."
Although the LTAC Family Support Group is for families of current or former LTAC patients, Jones states that DeKalb Medical hopes to expand in the future to accommodate others in the community who have a medically fragile loved on whose condition doesn't fall into categories served by other self-help groups.
