Local High School Graduates Win Dr. Gulshan Harjee Scholarships

August 13, 2010
Decatur, GA -- Four recent graduates of local high schools were awarded the Dr. Gulshan Harjee Scholarship to pursue careers in medicine or allied healthcare. They are:
  • Jessica Bilz, a South Gwinnett High School graduate attending University of Georgia, who aspires to become a physician
  • First Runner-Up Candice Slater, a Southwest DeKalb High School graduate attending University of Georgia, to pursue her goal of becoming a pharmacist
  • Second Runner-Up, Sonia Mathew, a Brookwood High School graduate attending Mercer University to ultimately become a medical doctor
  • Third Runner-Up Benjamin Chesler, a Yeshiva Atlanta High School graduate attending University of Georgia to become a pharmacist

The annual scholarship of up to $1,500 is awarded to high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited educational program for medicine, nursing, pharmacy, patient care or other related healthcare field. This scholarship fund was established by Dr. Gulshan Harjee, a native of Tanzania, who overcame many financial and cultural barriers and extreme hardships to become a physician. Gaining admission to medical school in Iran at the age of 14, the Decatur-based internist hopes to help others pursue their dream to become a doctor or healthcare provider, continuing a commitment and legacy of giving back to the local and global communities.

In addition to her roles as doctor and Chief Executive Officer and President of First Medical Care, Inc., Dr. Harjee serves on the board of directors of DeKalb Medical, DeKalb Medical Society. She also serves on the southeastern region advisory board of UNICEF, focusing on global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
