DeKalb Medical Offers Bipolar Disorder Community Forum

May 13, 2010

Decatur, GA -- DeKalb Medical Behavioral Health Services department now offers a Bipolar Disorder Community Forum. This is a community service provided by the hospital at no charge. The group is facilitated by Neil Kahn, M.D., Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at DeKalb Medical and Paul Olander, L.C.S.W., C.C.M., Director of Behavioral Health Services.

This service is a monthly support group and educational meeting for family and loved ones of persons living with bipolar disorder. Interested persons currently in recovery from active bipolar disorder are welcome to attend as well. The first meeting in October will feature a brief seminar on the history of bipolar disorder and its treatment, followed by an extended question-and-answer session covering any related issues.

The group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the 801 Classroom, DeKalb Medical, 2701 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Ga. 30033. Free parking is offered on Bill Thrasher Street, off Winn Way. Meetings for the remainder of 2010 are June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sep. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. More about the Bipolar Disorder Community Forum

Capitalizing on Dr. Kahn's and department staff's expertise and experience in crisis stabilization of bipolar disorder-based acute episodes of mania or depression with suicidal ideation, the goals of the group are to:

  • Support and educate family members and friends about Bipolar disorder, including diagnosis and prognosis with and without treatment
  • Remove the stigma and mystery surrounding this medical disease that often manifests through dangerous or provocative behaviors by the identified patient
  • Help reduce readmissions of people with Bipolar disorder to the hospital by decreasing relapse and increasing compliance with treatment recommendations.

Physicians may call Dr. Kahn at 404.501.0001 for additional details, or Paul Olander at 404.501.5986.
