The gynecologic oncology specialists at DeKalb Medical Physicians Group Atlanta Gynecologic Oncology Specialists will work closely with you and your family as a team to provide the most current cancer information, diagnostic procedures and treatment options available. These specially trained gynecological oncology professionals and their support services staff provide patient- and family-centered care in an atmosphere of compassion, commitment, trust and healing.
Chandar Bhimani, MD. specializes in the treatment of oncologic and hematologic disorders such as breast, lung, colon, prostate and blood disorders. He has a special interest in the treatment of breast and gastrointestinal related cancers. Dr. Bhimani is board certified in internal medicine as well as Hematology and Oncology.
Dr. Bhimani received his medical degree from Liaquat medical college, Jamshoro, Pakistan. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at Mount Sinai, an affiliate of Queens Medical Center, NY. After completion of his residency, he worked as a Hospitalist and Internal Medicine physician in the State of Washington before joining the faculty in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Emory University Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. He has previously worked at the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, GA. He completed his three year fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology at the Winship Cancer Institute. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Bhimani, joined Emory University School of Medicine/Winship Cancer Center at Saint Joseph’s Hospital as an Assistant Professor for more than 3 plus years before joining Dekalb Medical Physicians Group.
Dr. Bhimani’s has participated in research include the evaluation of newly approved therapeutic agents on the survival of small cell lung cancer patients, gene expression, tumor biology of pulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasm, and differentiated thyroid cancers. His focus is in providing individualized cancer care and ensuring quality of life of survivors. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bhimani participates in teaching residents and medical students.
David D. Shepard, MD, originally from Evanston, IL, traveled south to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, where he attained a BS in Biology and graduated with honors in 2001. He attended medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine and remained in Indianapolis, Indiana to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital, a 600+ bed tertiary care center. Dr. Shepard was granted board certification in internal medicine in 2008. Pursuing sub-specialization as a Hematologist/Medical Oncologist, Dr. Shepard moved to Ann Arbor, MI to complete a hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) member institution and one of the nation’s top cancer centers.
While at University of Michigan, Dr. Shepard participated in both clinical and laboratory based research. He was a member of the American Society of Hematology Trainee Council, making efforts to improve medical education in Hematology as well as recruit underprivileged students into the field of medicine. Dr. Shepard presented results of his clinical research at two consecutive meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He completed fellowship in June of 2011 and began practicing as an attending Hematologist/Medical Oncologist at Northwest Georgia Oncology Centers in Carrollton, GA. He has established a successful practice and while the members of his group, the hospital administration, and his patients are quite sad to see him move on, he could not turn down the opportunity to join DeKalb Medical Physicians Group and move his wife and three children to the Decatur/Atlanta area.
