DeKalb Medical’s surgical weight loss procedures include:
• Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding - In lap-band surgery, the surgeon places a silicone rubber band around the top of a patient’s stomach. This creates a very small stomach pouch and causes a patient to feel full quickly. Food slowly flows from the smaller pouch into the lower part of the stomach and then into the rest of the digestive tract.
• Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass - During gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon staples the smaller, upper-part of the stomach, separating it from the rest of the stomach, reducing the amount of food that a patient can eat. The small intestine is then rerouted and connected to the smaller stomach pouch.
• Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy - During these weight loss procedures, a bariatric surgeon removes approximately 85 percent of the stomach, so that the stomach forms the shape of a tube or sleeve. The remainder of the tube-shaped stomach is sealed with staples. This operation is performed using several small incisions, instead of one large incision.
