How is it used?
HIPEC is used to treat cancer that has spread to the abdominal cavity, including cancers of the stomach, colon, appendix, large and small intestines and ovaries. HIPEC has been shown to extend survival rates of patients with these types of abdominal cancers.
With HIPEC, the chemotherapy is infused directly to the cancer site in higher concentrations immediately following specialized surgery to first remove as much of the cancerous tissue as possible, a process called cytoreduction. The heat enhances the chemotherapy’s penetration into the cancerous tissues. In a study conducted by The Netherlands Cancer Institute, where HIPEC has been performed since 1995, patients with end-stage cancer had their survival increased by an average of 21 months after receiving this treatment.
