Decatur, GA -- (Oct. 17, 2011) -- DeKalb Medical is pleased to
announce that the work of Neurologist Joseph D. Weissman, M.D., Ph.D.,
has been published in the Journal of Neurological Sciences, a
peer-reviewed medical journal.
NR2 antibodies: Risk assessment of
transient ischemic attack (TIA)/stroke in patients with history of
isolated and multiple cerbrovascular events appears in the January 2011 edition of the
Journal of Neurological Sciences.
The article details Dr. Weissman's research in developing a blood test
to predict a patient's risk of stroke, and was co-authored by research
partners at DeKalb Medical including Laboratory Administrative Director,
Roslyn Heath, M.B.A., M.T.(ASCP), and others at several academic
research institutions throughout the United States including Kennesaw
State University's Dr. Svetlana Dambinova. "Predicting stroke using
biomarkers would enable clinicians to help prevent stroke or mitigate
damage. Several stroke biomarkers have been investigated but none has
shown near term predictive value." said Dr. Weissman.
In addition to measuring stroke risk, the antibody biomarker test allows
clinicians to learn more about stroke function, including insight into
the rate of acute infarction (heart attack) and determining the number
of strokes a patient has already experienced. The antibody biomarker
test is CLIA-approved although not yet FDA-approved, and costs from $25
to $50, as compared to an MRI which can cost up to $5,000.
