DeKalb Medical Institute for Healthcare Improvement

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent not-for-profit organization helping to lead the improvement of healthcare throughout the world. Founded in 1991 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, IHI provides networking opportunities and tools and resources to help IHI participants improve their quality and patient safety programs.

DeKalb Medical participated in the 100,000 Lives Saved campaign and is an active participant in the ongoing 5 Million Lives Saved From Harm Campaign.

*100,000 Lives Saved – the goal for this campaign was to reduce inpatient deaths by 100,000 per year as hospitals implement six evidence-based strategies designed to reduce deaths due to certain hospital-acquired conditions.

*5 Million Lives Saved From Harm – beginning after the successful completion of the 100,000 Lives Saved campaign, the goal was to increase the number of evidence-based strategies and eliminate over five million instances of hospital-acquired conditions.

Commitment to these campaigns and the resources to implement their strategies has been essential to DeKalb Medical’s successful quality and patient safety programs. Examples of how DeKalb Medical is taking advantage the work of the IHI to provide excellent, safe care for our patients may be viewed by clicking on “Safety Initiatives.”
